Intermittent Lane Closures Saturday on U.S. 31 in Prattville

Intermittent Lane Closures Saturday on U.S. 31 in Prattville Expected to Have Minimal Traffic Impact

PRATTVILLE – Motorists on Saturday may experience minimal traffic impact from intermittent lane closures alternating in both directions on U.S. Highway 31 in Prattville between Fairview Avenue (Highway 14) and County Road 12.

The lane closures are part of the Alabama Department of Transportation's project to resurface that two-lane stretch of U.S. 31. The lane closures are associated with preparations for the safety widening that will add an additional two feet of paved shoulder to the roadway to help prevent lane departure crashes.

The Saturday lane closures will be during daylight hours, but the bulk of the resurfacing project will be conducted during overnight hours when traffic volumes are at their lowest to minimize impacts. Weekend volumes are also lower, and Saturday impacts are expected to be minimal and will be managed by a flagging operation.

ALDOT's resurfacing U.S. 31 resurfacing project is part of a $4 million facelift for the roadway, which hasn't been resurfaced in this area in at least 10 years. For the past six years, ALDOT has been adding extra shoulder to rural and suburban two-lane roadways to reduce lane departure crashes. These lane departure reduction efforts contributed in 2010 to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials awarding ALDOT its annual Safety Leadership Award.
