SAFE HAVEN BABY BOX

The Alabama Safe Haven Law (Ala. Code § 26-25-1) allows a mother to anonymously surrender her baby age 45 days or younger at any manned fire station. A baby box is a device that establishes a protected environment for infants that is accessible from outside of the fire station. Mothers who can no longer care for their infants would place the child inside the baby box via an outside door. The interior of the box is a climate-controlled environment inside the fire station that is designed to protect and meet the child’s needs. Once placed in the box, an alarm would sound at the fire station and the police department to notify first responders. Firefighters would retrieve the child, perform a patient assessment and meet the child’s immediate healthcare needs. The child would be transported via ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation. Ultimately, the child would be placed in the state’s foster care system prior to being eligible for adoption.

On Thursday, January 11, 2024, elected government officials, local leaders, pastors, and citizens joined Kids To Love to celebrate and bless the second Safe Haven Baby Box in the State of Alabama. “I’m honored to partner with Kids to Love and Safe Haven Baby Boxes to provide this resource in the City of Prattville. I hope this baby box will be a blessing to anyone who needs it and a vital step in the reduction of infant abandonment deaths throughout the country,” said Mayor Bill Gillespie, Jr.

“It’s an honor to have the baby box installed at Prattville Fire Station #4. The safety and welfare of that child, who is absolutely defenseless and helpless, is paramount to anything else. This baby box supports the mission of the Prattville Fire Department, which is to protect lives and property by preventing the occurrence and minimizing the effects of fire, sudden illness, accidents, and disasters,” said Prattville Fire Chief Terry Brown.
