The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is a volunteer board of citizens appointed to preserve and protect the buildings, sites, structures, areas, and districts of historic significance in Prattville.

 

Meetings

The HPC’s normal meeting times are the fourth Thursday of the month, at 4:30 p.m., in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

The deadline to apply to appear before the HPC is a month before the meeting.  Please consult the submission calendar for dates.

 

Duties of the Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission has the following powers and functions:

  1. Preserve and protect buildings, structures, and sites of historic and architectural value in the historic district;
  2. Prepare a survey of property and recommend to the City Council certain buildings, structures, sites, and districts for designation as historic properties or districts; and
  3. Hear and decide upon requests for Certificates of Appropriateness to change the exterior appearance of historic properties, or any building, structure, or site within an historic district, including new construction, demolition, and signs.

History

Prattville’s Historic Preservation Commission was established by Ordinance 2002-024 in October 2002.  The first members were appointed in 2005 by Ordinance 2005-047.

The inaugural members of the HPC were:

  • Gray Price, Chairman
  • Jean Davis, Vice-Chairman
  • Lenore Kirkpatrick
  • Thea Langley
  • Greg Walker
  • Jack Colson
  • Belinda Edwards

The Prattville Historic District was established by Ordinance 2008-002 in January 2008.

Today, the commission consists of seven members nominated by the Mayor and appointed by the City Council to serve three-year terms.  The current members can be found on our Boards & Committees.
