The Planning Commission (PC) is a volunteer board of citizens appointed to adopt and maintain the City’s comprehensive plan, hear and decide upon subdivisions of land (plats), and to make recommendations to the City Council on zoning/rezoning requests.

 

Meetings

The Planning Commission’s normal meeting times are the third Thursday of the month, at 3:00 p.m., in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

The deadline to apply to appear before the PC is a month prior to the meeting.  Please consult the submission calendar for dates.

 

Duties of the Commission

The Planning Commission has the following powers and functions:

  1. Make and adopt a comprehensive plan for the physical development of the City;
  2. Promote public interest in and understanding of the comprehensive (master) plan;
  3. Adopt regulations governing the subdivision of land within its jurisdiction;
  4. Approve or disapprove subdivision plats; and
  5. Make reports and recommendations to the City Council on zoning actions.

History

Prattville’s Planning Commission was first formed in 1953 with the following members:

  • Chester Wingard, Chairman

  • A. Taylor, Police Chief
  • H.M. Doster
  • H. Traudt
  • B. Brooks
  • R.K. Nichols
  • H. Moncrief

 

Mary Alice Baker, the City Clerk, was selected to serve as the Commission’s first clerk.

 

Today, the Commission consists of nine members which include the mayor, or his or her designee, one of the administrative officials of the City selected by the mayor, a member of the council to be selected by it, and six persons appointed by the mayor.  The mayor, council member, and administrative official serve terms concurrent with the mayor’s/council’s elected term, and the six appointed members serve six-year terms.
