FAQs

Do you have questions about household garbage, yard trash, or recycling?
Check out the FAQs for the Sanitation Department.

Where do I find holiday schedule for trash and garbage collection?

How do I determine what days my household garbage and residential trash is collected?

The city provides a GIS map of each district's collection days.

Some of my garbage was picked up, but some bags or other items were left. Why?

Sometimes household garbage is mixed in with trash (including shredded paper, cardboard boxes, grass clippings). City garbage is hauled to a transfer station where we pay tipping fees to have it hauled off. Trash is hauled to the landfill. We make every attempt possible to place as many items in the landfill to keep the cost down. The garbage truck may have left these items for disposal by the trash truck. Please contact the Sanitation Dept at (334) 595-0624 if you feel something was left that should have been collected on the day in question.

How do I safely dispose old paint containers?

Paint can be toxic and dangerous to the environment if it’s not disposed of properly. Follow the general steps, listed below, for disposing latex and oil-based paint that you no longer need, but different areas may have different requirements and restrictions. Follow the paint-disposal procedures in your area.

Mix an equal amount of cat litter into the latex paint in the can. If you have more than half a can, you can also pour the paint into a lined box or trash can. Then pour in the cat litter.

Stir the cat litter into the paint until it thickens and won’t spill. Allow the mixture to sit for one hour.

Lastlu, Throw the dried paint in the can into the garbage. Be sure to remove the lid from the can.

If I do not put my garbage out on time, will Sanitation come back by to pick it up?

City Ordinance instructs residents to have garbage out by 7:00 a.m. on collection days. The garbage trucks leave the Sanitation Lot by 7:15 a.m. To prevent garbage from being missed, ensure that it is out on the curb by 7:00 a.m. Depending on the route, the amount of garbage collected, and other factors, collection times may vary. Every attempt will be made, if time permits, and the truck is still in the neighborhood, to return to your address. The option of dropping off missed garbage at the Landfill, where they have garbage dumpsters, is still available. Please bring your proof of garbage service (water bill) with you to the landfill.

Why was my trash not picked up when the rest of the neighborhood was collected?

If a vehicle is blocking the trash truck from pulling up beside the trash, the boom truck operator is unable to use the boom to pick up the trash without the risk of damaging the vehicle. If trash is left for any reason, a Sanitation Foreman will drop off a letter explaining why the trash was left.

Where and when can I drop off trash or garbage?

The Landfill is located on County Road 4, adjacent to the Whetstone Sports Complex. It is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents can take non-garbage items for drop off there, however, the landfill is now operated by a private waste management company so there may be a charge. For information about the landfill, please call JB Waste at (334) 365-4635, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Garbage and trash can be dropped off between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Saturdays only at 530 Doster Road. Residents must also bring a copy of their current water bill showing proof of sanitation services.

Where is the Recycling Center and what do they take?
