The City of Prattville has announced that United States Retired Army Specialist Dustin Gish will serve as this year’s grand marshal for the city’s annual Independence Day parade, scheduled for Saturday, July 3rd. Gish toured Iraq from 2006-2008 and was injured while serving his country.

This year’s parade theme is Salute to our Hometown Heroes.

“Dustin was an obvious choice for grand marshal,” said Kellie Cook, Special Events Director for the City. “He is a true example of a hometown hero, and he has proven that freedom is not free.”

The Independence Day parade will be held on Saturday, July 3rd as the 4th falls on Sunday. The parade will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Autauga County Courthouse and will end at Stanley-Jensen Stadium. Float participants are encouraged to decorate their entries in this year’s theme. Children on bikes, tricycles and scooters are also invited to participate in this family-fun parade. Entry forms are due by June 25th and can be picked up at the Cultural Arts Center or by visiting the Independence Day events page. There is no registration fee to enter the parade.

The Annual Lion’s Club Bar-B-Q and Camp Stew Sale will take place at Pratt Park at 10:00 a.m. The club will also be offering bake sales, arts and crafts vendors, and live entertainment for the community.

“Cardboard Boat Races”, sponsored by Prattville’s Dept. of Leisure Services, are scheduled to begin after the parade at the Prattville City Pool. Pre-registration is required. The boats will be assembled by cardboard and duct tape, the morning of the race. For contest rules and information, call Leisure Services at 334-361-3640.

A patriotic program will be held on Sunday, July 4th, beginning at 6pm at Stanley-Jensen Stadium. Food vendors will be on site. There will be live entertainment by the Prattville Pops and the Prattville Community Chorus. Fireworks begin at dark. The admission to this spectacular event is FREE and the public is encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. NO pets will be allowed on the field.
