PRATTVILLE, Ala. – The City of Prattville has announced John Blumentritt as the grand marshal for the 2025 Independence Day Parade, set for Friday, July 4, in historic downtown Prattville.
Blumentritt is a retired U.S. Air Force pilot, university professor, and longtime vintage vehicle enthusiast. His lifetime of service, love for history, and deep community involvement have made him a beloved figure in Prattville.
For years, Blumentritt’s iconic red fire engine has been a familiar sight in Prattville parades, often carrying dignitaries and previous grand marshals. When a city official contacted him this year, he assumed it was to coordinate his usual duties behind the wheel.
“I was completely astonished,” Blumentritt said. “I thought we were just going over logistics. When she said I was the grand marshal, I quietly thought, ‘Does this mean I’m transporting myself?’”
Blumentritt said Independence Day is a time for reflection and gratitude.
“It’s the perfect time to reflect on the hard work it takes to preserve our freedoms,” he said. “Let’s honor those who fought for them in the past and those still doing that work today.”
The celebration begins at 9 a.m. with the parade, followed by a full day of family-friendly festivities:
Lions Club BBQ and Camp Stew Fundraiser: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pratt Park, featuring barbecue, a patriotic program, arts and crafts vendors, and live music.
Cardboard Boat Races: Start at 10 a.m. at Pratt Pool, with creative, homemade boats competing for top honors.
Pool Party: 1 to 5 p.m., with the Splash Pad open all day.
Rock the Lot: 6:30 to 8:30 pm is a new event in the Academy Sports parking lot with food trucks and live music by The Alex Walker Band.
Prattville Annual Fireworks Show: The celebration concludes with a spectacular fireworks show at dusk, launched near the Clock Tower off U.S. Highway 82 at Legends Circle.
