Today, we’re shining the spotlight on the man behind the signature polka-dot welder’s hat — Robert Browder. For an incredible 59 years (yes, you read that correctly), Robert has been the prime example of what it looks like to serve with dedication, integrity, and heart. A lesson he learned from his father, Harry Browder, who also worked for the city of Prattville.
Robert’s service with the City of Prattville began in 1967 at just 17 years old, when he joined as a volunteer firefighter while attending John Patterson State Technical College for welding. He became a full-time firefighter in 1970, before answering the call to serve our nation in the Vietnam War until 1972. Once home, he rejoined the Prattville Fire Department, and on his off days, he could be found trading his firefighter helmet for a welder’s mask, working for the Vehicle Maintenance Department. With a positive attitude and a strong work ethic, it came as no surprise when he was named the City’s first Fireman of the Year in 1975.
Throughout his remarkable career, Robert has worn many hats — Prattville firefighter, Second Class Petty Officer in the Navy, city mechanic and welder, and Chief Deputy with the Autauga County Sheriff’s Office. After retiring from the Autauga County Sheriff’s office in 2000, he became a security officer for the Federal Courthouse, while still working part time as a welder. While each role reflects his versatility and commitment, it is his leadership and unmatched craftsmanship that truly set him apart.
Robert’s hard work can be seen throughout the city, from repairs and welding projects to creative problem-solving and maintenance — his fingerprints are on countless improvements essential to keeping operations running smoothly. He has fabricated everything from one of the city’s first garbage trucks to steel encasing for sewer lines. You will especially notice his custom work during the holidays, from the giant pumpkin carriage, handcrafted marquee letters, and Santa’s sleigh, to the permanent structures like the Fire Training Facility and the arches and bridges in parks and throughout the city. Give him a simple drawing, and he has the rare ability to turn it into something both functional and magical for everyone to enjoy, especially when budgets are tight.
Today, you can find him working part-time as a welder with the Engineering Department, bringing decades of experience and skill to every project. You often hear the phrase, “the man, the myth, the legend,” but at the City of Prattville, we are fortunate to work alongside someone who truly lives up to that title. Robert Browder is more than an employee — he is a mentor, a role model, and a friend to many. Simply put, Prattville works better because Robert is PART OF THE TEAM.
“Robert represents the very best of Prattville. For nearly six decades, his talent, dedication, and tireless work ethic have helped shape our community. His legacy is built into the framework of this city, and we are deeply grateful for his commitment.” – Mayor Gillespie
Thank you, Robert, for 59 years of service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to Prattville and our country. You truly are one of a kind!
