“Leapin’ Lizards!” The iconic Tony Award®-winning musical Annie will be performed at Prattville’s Way Off Broadway Theatre from July 10 to July 27, 2025. Tickets will be available for purchase starting Monday, June 23. “We’re excited to bring this beloved and heartfelt show to the River Region audiences this summer,” shares Theatre Coordinator, Martha Wilkinson. “With its iconic title character, this production continues to enchant generations of theatre enthusiasts, old and new, by cheerfully confronting great challenges with perseverance, courage, and cleverness. For decades, Annie has radiated hope, serving as a call to our better selves and an embodiment of the thrill of hard-earned optimism. Promising a brighter ‘Tomorrow’ is not just for Annie but for all who need her message” adds Wilkinson.
Annie is directed by Blair Dyson, who helmed last summer’s delightful Shakespearean comedy, Twelfth Night. Blair is in his 17th year as Theatre Director at Prattville High School and has directed a total of 54 full-length plays and 42 one-acts since 2000. He holds a BFA in Theatre from the University of Montevallo (2003) and an MS from Texas A&M-Commerce (2022). Other directing credits at WOBT include Barefoot in the Park, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and The Secret Garden.
In challenging times, holding onto hope requires immense determination, which can often come in a surprisingly small package. Little Orphan Annie has inspired countless theatergoers to believe that sunshine is always around the corner. The beloved musical is a celebration of family, optimism, and the American spirit that is the ultimate antidote to life’s challenges. The Chicago Tribune hailed it as “one of the best family musicals ever penned!” Annie features a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, and lyrics by Martin Charnin, all of whom received Tony Awards® in 1977 for their contributions. Based on Harold Gray’s popular comic strip “Little Orphan Annie,” which debuted in the 1920s in the New York Daily News and became widely read in the 30s and 40s.
The beloved score includes hits like “Maybe,” “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” “Easy Street,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You,” and the timeless anthem of hope, “Tomorrow.”
