Thanksgiving, Buying Locally & Thanks from Our Mayor

November 21, 2012

Dear Partners of Prattville,

BillGillespieJr 9335 bioAs we move into the holiday season, I want to wish you and yours the best. We have much to be thankful for here in our great City.

Today, I would like to talk with you regarding the importance of shopping local and choices. There is much we can control and some that we cannot. When I first took over as Mayor, I had a little saying, "control what you can control, improvise when you have to, and let the good Lord take care of the rest." One thing we can control is where we shop, where we spend our hard-earned dollars.

My family and I will be out shopping locally this season and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all Prattville residents to buy local; the return on your investment will be evident in our community.

For years, it has been a personal goal of mine to buy local whenever possible. If we pay attention, it is easy to see how our local businesses give back to the community. How many of you have purchased fundraising discount cards from our youth? I know I have, at least 6 each year. Several national chain stores give grants to special events, arts programs and more. One business sponsored the National Night Out event we all enjoyed in August. Local businesses sponsor sports teams and give generously to programs that are special to them and us.

I have spoken with many residents within the River Region, statewide, and beyond. I have consistently heard that Prattville is one of the cleanest and safest cities around. With that said, your shopping local helps us achieve that recognition as we are able to fund public safety and public works through your tax dollars.

Business growth and economic development hinge on the success of our current local businesses, which means your dollars spent locally make you a key component of successful economic development.

We want the City of Prattville to remain the best community in the River Region, but it will take everyone's commitment to achieve this goal.

Thank you for working with me on so many projects and initiatives over the past 22 months. I look forward to continuing this work with you, the Partners of Prattville.

Improving project at a time.
