celebration of the ARts

The City of Prattville will begin its annual Celebration of the Arts on March 2 as the Prattville Creative and Performing Arts Council hosts the annual Arts Dinner, honoring Janice Hawkins, Troy University’s First Lady and patron of the Arts and Humanities in Alabama. This event is held each year to honor someone who has made a significant contribution to the arts in Alabama. In the hour prior to the dinner, there will be a silent auction and reception to raise funds for the Friends of the Arts. Tickets are available at cc.prattvilleal.gov.

Next, Prattauga Art Guild will host Book Arts Workshops on Saturday, March 9, one for children (ages 8-12) from 10 am until 12 pm, and one for teens (ages 13-18) from 1 until 3 pm. Students will create their own book and be given the opportunity to write and illustrate a story inside. Space is limited and registration is required.

On Sunday, March 10, the Prattville Pops will perform their annual March Madness Concert at 3:00 pm at the Doster Community Center. This fun, free concert will feature various marches.

The Prattauga Art Guild will host an opening reception for “Stars Fell On,” an exhibition featuring works and stories of artists from Alabama, on March 14, from 5-7 pm. The exhibition will be up through April 7th at the Prattville Creative Arts Center and Gallery. Gallery hours are: Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am until 2 pm, and Sundays from 1 pm until 4 pm.

The Way Off Broadway Theatre will host a free Theatre Workshop on March 16 from 9 am until noon. This 3-hour workshop, directed by Joey Fine, is designed to teach the basics of theatre, including on stage, off stage, and behind the stage happenings. The workshop is open to ages 6-14 and will be held at the Way Off Broadway Theatre. Space is limited and registration is required.

Local songwriters, including award-winning songwriter Karren Pell accompanied by Tim Henderson, Rick Hansen, and Becky Folmar, will share their songs and the stories behind them on March 21 at the Way Off Broadway Theatre (203 West 4th Street). This event is from 7 pm – 9 pm and admission is $5.

Plein Air artists will take to the streets on April 4 and 5 for the annual Paint Prattville Plein Air Painting Event. Check out the works created by these artists at the Wilson Pickett Music and Arts Festival on April 6 and in the Prattville Creative Arts Center and Gallery until April 28.

The Wilson Pickett Music and Arts Festival will be held on April 6, from 9 am until 4 pm, with a concert after the festival at 6 pm. The festival is free and open to the public. It will feature an artist village with local and regional artists for shopping, a variety of food vendors, and arts activities for the kids and teens. The stage will feature entertainment all day long, and there will be other activities around the park for everyone to enjoy! Call (334) 595-0854 for more information.

These projects have been made possible in part by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts and the Wilson Pickett Jr. Legacy, LLC. “Stars Fell On,” Words and Music, and The Wilson Pickett Music and Arts Festival have also been made possible in part by grants from the Alabama Bicentennial Commission Foundation.
