Salute to America's Veterans at the Alabama National Fair

The second annual Salute to America’s Veterans will be held on Friday, October 9, 2009, at the Alabama National Fair and Agricultural Exposition in Montgomery, Alabama. This year’s theme for the Salute to America’s Veterans is “A Welcome Home Celebration for Vietnam Veterans.” The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a Parade of Honor along Federal Drive and will end at Garrett Coliseum. All Vietnam Veterans are invited to be a part of the parade and can do so by meeting at 4:30 p.m. on October 9 at the State Farmers’ Market located at 1655 Federal Drive. The public is also invited to line the parade route in order to give the Vietnam Veterans the welcome home celebration they never formally received. The formal program will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the North Entrance of Garrett Coliseum with the National Anthem and a flyover. Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange will be on hand to introduce Governor Bob Riley. Governor Riley will bring a message and then will introduce the keynote speaker, General Hal Moore.

The purpose of this special salute is to recognize and commemorate those Vietnam Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, those who are still missing in action, honor those who were prisoners of war, and acknowledge all members of the Armed Forces who have bravely and honorably served their nation. Also, a replica of the Alabama Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall will be displayed at the event.

The Salute to America’s Veterans was founded in 2008 through a partnership between the Alabama National Fair and Agricultural Exposition and the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. Out of that partnership, a planning committee was formed with representatives from the active military, National Guard and Reserves, the Governor’s office, Kiwanis Club of Montgomery, veterans service organizations, and veterans advocacy groups from across Alabama. The committee’s program this year will provide the public with an opportunity to honor our nation’s Vietnam Veterans by celebrating their service.

This event is free to all Military personnel with proper identification including active, National Guard, reserve, and retired (not to include spouses and dependents). Please join us at this special event.
