In observance of Memorial Day, the City of Prattville will join American Legion Post 122 in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Autauga County Courthouse at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 26, 2014. Mayor Gillespie will say a few words at the event honoring our nation's service members who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Also participating in the event will be the American Legion Post 122 Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 1349, and the VFW Post 1349 Ladies Auxiliary. American Legion Post 122 Commander Tim Ray and VFW Post 1349 Commander Janice Harris will both also speak on behalf of their veterans. Willie Rogers, Commander of the 32nd District of Alabama American Legion, will emcee the event.

"While this holiday is the unofficial beginning of summer for many, Memorial Day, first known as 'Decoration Day' in 1866, signifies a time that we honor our patriots who gave their lives in service of their country with a commemoration of what they have done for us," said Mayor Bill Gillespie, Jr. "Please join me in paying respect to these heroes, as is the reason for this observance."

The City of Prattville will fly all flags at half-staff from sunrise until noon. This unique custom honors the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country for the morning. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

City offices will be closed on Monday, May 26th in observance of the holiday. No garbage or trash will be collected. All Monday and Tuesday garbage routes for the City of Prattville will be collected on Tuesday, May 27th. Yard trash services will begin on Wednesday, May 28th with Monday routes. Sanitation will attempt to collect all trash routes between Wednesday and Friday of that week. If you have any questions or concerns regarding Sanitation services, please call 334-595-0621.
