In observance of Memorial Day, the City of Prattville will join American Legion Post 122 in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Autauga County Courthouse at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 28, 2012. Mayor Gillespie will say a few words at the event honoring our nation's service members who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Also participating in the event will be the American Legion Post 122 Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 1349, and the VFW Post 1349 Ladies Auxiliary. Joseph Spitzer, Civil Air Patrol and Sons of the American Legion member, will emcee the event.

"While this holiday is the unofficial beginning of summer for many, Memorial Day, first known as 'Decoration Day' in 1866, signifies a time that we honor our patriotic dead with a commemoration of what they have done for us," said Mayor Bill Gillespie, Jr. "Please join me in paying respect to these heroes, as is the reason for this observance."

The City of Prattville will fly all flags at half-staff from sunrise until noon. This unique custom honors the war dead for the morning and living veterans for the rest of the day.

City offices will be closed on Monday, May 28th in observance of the holiday. No garbage or trash will be collected. All Monday and Tuesday garbage routes for the City of Prattville will be collected on Tuesday, May 29th. Normal schedules will resume on Wednesday, May 30th.
