March 1, 2017

The deadline for submissions to the High School Essay Writing Contest sponsored by the City of Prattville has been EXTENDED to March 3, 2017.

The theme of the contest is How The Arts Make Prattville the “Preferred Community.” This theme is open to the interpretation of individual students who look at our community differently and will encourage them to look at the programs and events offered in our community through our schools, Creative and Performing Arts Council, and other businesses and organizations who provide opportunities in the Cultural Arts in and around Prattville.

If you are a student in Autauga County who does not reside in the City of Prattville, you may write about how the Arts play a part in your own community.

Award ribbons will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each grade at a special awards ceremony on March 10 at the Way Off Broadway Theatre featuring author/speaker Roger Reid. The Grand Prize winner will receive an award ribbon and their name and photograph will be included in an upcoming issue of Potential magazine. All winners will be given the opportunity to present an excerpt of their essay on stage at the Fountain City Arts Festival on April 1, 2017.

Rules are listed on the attached flyer. Students are asked not include your name or other identifying information on any sheet other than the cover sheet. Your essay should include a header with the title and page numbers only.

Essays will be judged based on a rubric with the following criteria: ideas and relevance to the theme, organization, voice, and conventions. Winners will be notified by email to attend the awards ceremony, so please provide an email address that you check often.

This contest is open to all public, private, and homeschool students in Autauga County in grades 9 through 12. Submissions received after midnight on March 3, 2017, will not be accepted.

For more information, contact the Special Events Office at 334-595-0854.
